I’m interrupted when Ince says, “Rain said this day is to be one of her most favorite with her mother.” He exhales and then swallows. “Is it wrong to be envious?”

I think of my own mother and how wonderful she was and how she would have never surrendered me as Ince has been. “I have only known you for this day, but I already know your heart is pure, so no, I do not think it wrong to be envious even though our ways are to be without jealousy.”

Thinking of Gunner, I gaze at the earth under my feet. “I too have succumbed to such emotions.”

Ince gasps. “But you are Leader. How can this be?”

“One is not born with all the answers, no matter who they are. I am learning that the learning is part of the experience. Making mistakes is part of the lessons, part of the growth.”

“When I was young, my mother told me being humble is part of being a great leader. You have been chosen well.”

Hoping he is right, I choose to take advantage of this moment where we are free to speak. “Why does my young favor today?”

Ince smiles as he looks at the trees. “Rain is very guarded with what she shares with me, to avoid altering more than what she wishes to, but when she spoke of this day, she beamed.” His eyes close. “She radiated when speaking of her mother releasing some of her fear, finally accepting Rain to be more than human.” His eyes open, and his smiles fades. “A child knows how a parent feels about them. I sensed my mother’s upcoming sacrifice, how she chose to not allow me close to her heart to save herself from grief, meanwhile breaking my heart.” His eyes well with unshed tears. “The day King came to retrieve me is a day I will never forget.”

Physical pain echoes through me.

“Yes.” He nods, “King was sure to keep me at bay, also wishing to not become attached.” A few tears slip down his face and fall from his chin.

“Rain’s love is the only love I’ve ever known.”

Back in Ince’s cave, sitting next to the fire, I shiver for the very first time in my whole life. “Ince, we don’t get cold, so why am I so?”

He examines the cooked meat on his stick then takes a big bite of the

creature with extra legs and sharp teeth. Speaking around the food in his mouth, he declares, “Eat, Leader. Gain strength. The cold is his building rage.

Rose infuriates him so. Hopefully, we shall pay the price, not her.”

A deeper chill runs through me.

Ince chews rapidly. “Fear not. His love for her is his weakness.”

“You are sure of this?”

His teeth rip more cooked flesh from bone. “Rain may be cautious with her words but would never lie to me.” He stops chewing and gives me a piercing stare. “Be sure to follow her advice. She is brilliant, Leader, and working so hard for her Warriors.
